This was book was exquisitely done and the author’s performance for the audiobook is also very well done. I could see how the author would not want to pass the task of reading such a work to anyone else. His voice is so present for the entire work but not in a way that is at all bothersome or distracting, quite the opposite actually.
This book does not shy away from the horrific and gruesome truth of slavery in the United States. There is no decent way to do a totally indecent thing to another human being.
The author’s note at the end of the book was illuminating and not to be skipped.
This is not an easy read. It should turn your stomach. It should give you nightmares and cause you to loose sleep. It should cause you to struggle with what is considered just and right even in our modern times.
Read this when you have the mental and emotional fortitude to meet its truth. I’m glad I finally made time to read this.
