I’m not a fan of this book.
To begin with this book should have come with all the trigger warnings from suicidal ideation to an actual suicide attempt, parental loss to infidelity, and don’t forget miscarriage, cheating, and divorce and all of this is in the first 25 to 30% of the book. The beginning is dark.
Honestly I’m not surprised people find this a satisfying narrative and eat this book up, but I cannot and will not be one of them. I’m frustrated because I think this book, and books like it, make depression seem like something that a week away caught up in another person’s life at other people’s expense can fix. This is not how real suicidal ideation and depression work.
Even with its ambiguous ending this book doesn’t feel believable to me. This book promotes some pretty fucked up magical thinking in my opinion and the darkness of the beginning tainted the entire thing. Maybe for people who have not experienced suicidal ideation and attempted suicide, miscarriage and infertility, or parental death due to cancer this book is a winner because as someone who has experienced all of these this book fell flat and I’m still mad at the thoughtlessness of how it is promoted and recommended.
