Ann Patchett does a masterful job of capturing in her fiction the parts of life that seem stranger than fiction. I wasn’t sure what to expect but with how much I loved Tom Lake I wanted to give another Ann Patchett a try and I got the audiobook version perform by Tom Hanks on sale.
The Dutch House is about what we inherit and where disappointed expectations and hurt lead us. It is also equal parts about the emptiness of revenge and what time does to all of us and it doesn’t have to make sense. It is also about what connects us and separates us from each other and what do we really know about these humans we call our parents and siblings and spouses and friends. It was beautiful and Tom Hanks performance of the audiobook is nearly perfection.
